BERKELEY — Cal has a bye week to digest the first half of its football season and unravel how things went so badly sideways Saturday night against Duke.

The Bears are 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the ACC, but their prospects certainly appeared brighter than that when they stormed to a 21-7 lead barely 2 minutes into the second quarter.

Then the Blue Devils frustrated a season-best crowd of 42,240 at Memorial Stadium, scoring the final 38 points of the game in a 45-21 verdict. Duke put up 24 of those points in the second quarter to eradicate what was briefly a 14-point deficit.
