A recent report by the Fraser Institute reveals startling statistics on the cost and extent of public sector salaries and benefits compared to those of the private sector. On average, public sector employees enjoy higher wages, better job security and more generous benefits than those of their private sector counterparts.

Statistics from 2024 show government employees, on average, made 4.8% more in salary than their colleagues doing comparable work in the private sector. They retired 2.2 years earlier and missed 6.4 more days of work for personal reasons per year. As for job security, public sector workers had five times fewer job losses. Public sector employees are 2.3 times more likely to have a pension guaranteeing their income in retirement.
