Some members of Belleville city council are joining a chorus of mayors and municipal leaders across Ontario urging Premier Doug Ford to compromise on a planned bill to nix automated speed enforcement speed (ASE) cameras.

Twenty-two leaders across Ontario have signed their name to a joint letter calling for the premier to keep the cameras given several studies showing they are slowing traffic and creating safer streets in school zones.

“A total ban on ASE would reverse years of progress on safety in school zones. It would place more pressure on police, increase enforcement costs, and most critically, endanger lives,” the collective letter states.
