Up to 3000 people who applied to the NSW government for financial aid in the flood-ravaged Northern Rivers have potentially had their personal information compromised after a former contractor uploaded it to ChatGPT.
The NSW Reconstruction Authority on Monday said it was aware of the breach potentially involving the names, addresses, contact and health information of applicants to the Northern Rivers Resilient Homes Program.
It is understood a former contractor for the Reconstruction Authority (RA) shared a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet with 10 columns and more than 12,000 rows of information with ChatGPT between March 12-15, 2025.
A spokesperson for the government agency said there was no evidence that any of the information had been made public, “however this cannot be ruled out”.
