A seal pup believed to have been taken under suspicious circumstances has been found alive inside a rubbish bin at an RSL branch.

The Conservation Regulator is seeking public assistance after the incident involving the alleged taking of the Australian Fur Seal pup, which was found in the bin at the Portland RSL in south-west Victoria on September 30.

The Australian Fur Seal pup was transferred to Zoos Victoria Marine Response Unit for veterinary assessment.

Seals and other marine mammals are protected under the Wildlife Act 1975 .

It is illegal to take, be in possession of, feed or touch seals because it can affect the health and safety of the seal and individuals.
