Reports have recently suggested the government is considering allowing supermarkets such as Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Asda, Aldi, Lidl and Waitrose to open for longer on Sundays.
Treasury sources have reportedly been looking at modifications amid growing pressure surrounding a business rates overhaul for major retailers.
But a new statement from the government has cast major doubt on the proposal.
Numerous retailers still maintain more restrictive trading hours on Sundays. Smaller establishments - those below 280 square metres - enjoy the liberty to operate whenever they choose.
But larger outlets, including supermarket chains such as Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Asda , Aldi, Lidl and Waitrose, are allowed to trade for just six hours between 10am and 6pm.
