UPPER LEACOCK TOWNSHIP, Pa. —
A man was found dead in a silo in Pennsylvania over the weekend.
Emergency crews were called to a reported farm rescue in Upper Leacock Township just before 12:30 p.m. Saturday
Upper Leacock Fire Chief Larry Miller told sister station WGAL the man was found dead in the silo after inhaling "silo gas."
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, silo gas is a natural by-product of fermentation that collects in silos within a few hours after new feed is added. As fermentation occurs, nitric oxides and carbon dioxide are released.
The 60-foot-tall concrete silo was filled two days ago with high moisture corn product, according to Garden Spot Fire Rescue.
Miller said this year's warm and humid conditions have increased the number of incidents
