GARY — A 9-year-old was shot and killed Saturday night, according to Gary police.

Officers were dispatched around 6:30 p.m. to a home in the 400 block of Madison Street for a 911 hang-up call when they received a separate notification from Methodist Hospital about a child who had been shot, police said in a statement Sunday. A relative had taken the child to the hospital.

The child died from gunshot wounds, police said.

Although police did not reveal the circumstances of the shooting, they said these types of situations serve as reminders to practice safe gun storage.

"Every firearm owner has a duty to ensure firearms are properly secured and stored away from minors and unauthorized individuals to prevent accidental shootings and devastating losses," the statement said.
