PORTAGE — The sight of ammunition in a glove box during a traffic stop resulted in the arrest of a 44-year-old Gary man on a charge of being a serious violent felon in possession of a firearm, according to Portage police.
Police said they stopped the vehicle in question around 1:30 a.m. Thursday along westbound U.S. 20 in the area of Dombey Road and the driver began giving the officer false information about his identity.
When the driver opened the glove box to retrieve the vehicle's registration, the officer said he spotted ammunition for a gun. Police said there was also an open beer can and bottle of alcohol in the vehicle.
Police said they were able to identify the driver after an identification card was discovered and found three guns in the vehicle - two loaded handgu
