BEAUMONT, Texas — A north Jasper County man was placed under emergency detention for a mental health evaluation Sunday after firing more than 25 rounds inside his residence and falsely claiming someone had been killed, deputies said.

At about 10:30 a.m. Oct. 5 the man walked into the lobby of the Jasper County Sheriff's Office and reported he had been involved in a shooting at his home on FM 252 and that someone was dead at the scene, according to a news release from the sheriff's office.

A deputy spoke to the man and then went to the man's home to investigate while a Jasper Police officer stayed with the man at the sheriff's office.

Once he got to the man's home, the deputy found evidence that more than 25 rounds had been fired inside the home, but there were no signs of injuries to an
