QUEBEC — With the prime minister headed to Washington to meet Donald Trump , the premiers of Quebec and Ontario have teamed up with eight American governors to pressure the U.S. administration to end the bullying of Canada and cut a trade deal.
Emerging from a two-day meeting of the Great Lakes St. Lawrence governors and premiers, they ripped into the American president’s approach to trade negotiations, saying it is not the way to treat a neighbour and ally like Canada.
At the same time, they kept expectations low for an agreement to emerge from Prime Minister Mark Carney’s meeting with the U.S. president on Tuesday.
“As Doug said, the guy (Trump) always surprises everybody,” Premier François Legault said at a joint news conference with governors and the premier of Ontario, Doug Ford .
