GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A teen was shot and killed over the weekend while attending a memorial for another teen killed by gun violence.

At 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, officers heard the sound of gunshots in the area of the 400 block of Umatilla Street SE, Grand Rapids Police say.

Police say a 17-year-old boy was found and life-saving measures were attempted, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The teen was at a birthday celebration for Amillier Penn, a 15-year-old who was shot and killed while playing football with his friends on Umatilla Street in June 2024, Jermar Sterling, a youth activist, told 13 ON YOUR SIDE.
