Australia's top cyber intelligence agency probed 16 cases of suspected fraud within its own ranks last year, with two allegations deemed serious enough to launch formal investigations.

According to the Australian Signals Directorate's (ASD) latest annual report, one fraud investigation is still ongoing as of 30 June, with 15 claims found to be unsubstantiated.

An analysis of ASD's previous annual reports shows the number of internal fraud allegations jumped from zero in 2021-22 to 16 in the most recent reporting period, with the rise linked to a multi-billion-dollar workforce boost.

The powerful and secretive cyber spy agency had its funding increased by a record $10 billion in 2022 , which saw its workforce nearly double to over 4000 staff in mid-2025.
