A New Jersey man died after he was pulled from the ocean at a Seaside Park beach on Saturday, police said.
Authorities responded to the 8th Avenue beach after a bystander observed a swimmer in distress at 11:52 a.m., said Seaside Park Police Sgt. Andrew Casole.
The swimmer, identified as John DeVone, 54, of Whippany, N.J., was brought to shore by the fire department water rescue team, Casole said.
Authorities performed CPR on DeVone, who was unresponsive. He was taken to Community Medical Center in Toms River, where he later died, police said.
The incident comes as Jersey Shore beaches are unguarded. Dangerous rip currents were expected over the weekend while Hurricanes Humberto and Imelda churned the ocean.
