MT. JUDEA, Ark. (KY3/AP) - Arkansas officials shot and killed a male black bear that they believe fatally mauled a 60-year-old Springfield, Missouri, man last week at his campsite in the Ozark National Forest, authorities said Monday.
The body of Max Thomas of Springfield, Missouri, was discovered Thursday several yards outside the Sam’s Throne campground in northwest Arkansas, Newton County Sheriff Glenn Wheeler said.
“Max was a husband and a father who leaves behind several loved ones. He was out enjoying a beautiful part of the world when a very unfortunate incident occurred,” said Sheriff Wheeler. “We are getting some pushback from a small minority of people who feel the bear should not have been killed as a result of this.
