YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) -- The right pair of shoes is important to an athlete. A man who changed the sport shoe business was back in the Valley on Monday to talk about his story and how it started at Youngstown State University.
The Nike swoosh is everywhere. In 1962, YSU graduate Sonny Vaccaro was one of its most important ambassadors ever. He joined Nike in 1984 and would convince executives to sign Michael Jordon to wear their shoes.
"I always knew the kids sold the shoe. The coaches got paid for it in the early days. Now, the kids are able to get paid for it," Vaccaro said.
Vacarro told his story at the Curbstone Coaches Lunch. He was a YSU football player who got injured in 1959. The injury led basketball coach Dom Rosselli to ask Vaccaro for help.
