LYNCHBURG, Va. (WDBJ) - The Lynchburg Fire Department honored fallen firefighters Monday during a special wreath-laying ceremony at Miller Park.

It’s an annual event that kicks off the beginning of fire prevention awareness week.

The ceremony kicked off Fire Prevention Week, a time for reflection, remembrance, and education. The wreath-laying brought together firefighters, city leaders, and community members to pay tribute to those who never made it home.

Officials say it’s also an important reminder for families to stay proactive about fire safety, from checking smoke alarms to practicing escape plans. They say they will always remember the firefighters who go out every day, bravely risking their lives to save others.
