Senators on Monday failed to strike a funding deal for the fifth time – guaranteeing that the government shutdown will drag on even longer.

The Senate again shot down dueling bills authored by Republicans and Democrats. There's still no surefire end in sight to the fiscal crisis, which has shuttered a swath of federal agencies and services across the country.

President Donald Trump over the weekend continued to blame Democrats for Congress' failure to reach a funding agreement, bringing up the topic during an event to honor the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Navy in Norfolk, Virginia. The two-term Republican assured service members who are currently working without pay that they would get checks soon and even promised "across-the-board" pay raises.
