ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - The clock is ticking in Washington as lawmakers race to end a government shutdown that could leave thousands of Georgia workers without paychecks.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt warned Monday that the impact of the shutdown could worsen if lawmakers fail to reach a deal.
“If this shutdown continues, layoffs are going to be an unfortunate consequence,” Leavitt said.
Leavitt said that if Democrats do not pass a funding bill by midnight, federal employees across the state — including TSA agents, CDC researchers, and members of the military — will miss their next paycheck. She said funding for key programs, such as WIC, is also set to run out.
More than 111,000 Georgians work for the federal government.
