ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM)---This week is fire safety and prevention week, and local fire officials are reminding residents to take steps to prevent fires at their homes.
"Always check your smoke detector, keep everything away from the stove, and if you're charging those batteries, be home when you charge them because they will catch on fire," said Mike Riker, Captain of Elmira Heights Fire Department.
There are certain items that officials say you can have in your home that you might not expect to start a fire.
"The new chargers for the ebikes and the scooters have a lot more fire for those things than people realize. Keep it outside and charge it," said Riker.
