A patriotic makeover is underway at all Steak ‘n Shake restaurants.

In a bid to “proudly support American values and traditions,” the Indianapolis-based burger chain announced on Saturday, Oct. 4, that it has begun installing U.S. flags at all of its national locations.

“Every Steak n Shake is getting the tallest and biggest American flag that local governments will allow!” the fast-food chain wrote on social media platform X.

Shortly after Steak ‘n Shake announced its decision, Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX and Tesla, chimed in to support the restaurant chain in a post on his social media platform, X.

He wrote, “I’m ordering from there tomorrow!”

While some people shared Musk’s enthusiasm, others criticized the decision. One user commented, “What are American values and traditions? Fast food, beef, and obesity?”

Steak ‘n Shake confirmed its flag plans in a statement to USA TODAY on Monday, October 6.

Steak ‘n Shake, beef tallow and Cracker Barrel

Steak ‘n Shake made headlines earlier this year when it announced plans to cook its fries in beef tallow - a decision that caught the attention of Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., who aims to replace seed oils as part of his plan to improve the nation’s food industry. “We RFK’ed our fries,” Steak n’ Shake COO Dan Edwards told “Fox & Friends” in a February interview.

In August, the burger chain criticized Cracker Barrel’s decision to give its logo a facelift—a decision that was ultimately reversed after a wave of public outcry, including from President Donald Trump.

“Heritage is what got Cracker Barrel this far, and now the CEO wants to just scrape it all away. At Steak n Shake, we take pride in our history, our families, and American values,” Steak ‘n Shake said on Aug. 21.

“All are welcome,” added the social media post. “We will never market ourselves away from our past in a cheap effort to gain the approval of trend seekers.”
