DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — A teenager charged with causing a deadly crash while fleeing from law enforcement last week made his first appearance in Durham County Court on Monday, records show.
Kevin Aljeandro Ruiz-Gomez, 18, of Durham, was arrested on Friday in connection with a crash Thursday night, according to the Durham County Sheriff's Office.
Law enforcement said Ruiz-Gomez fled from deputies after being suspected of participating in a street race. Ruiz-Gomez's vehicle ran a red light at the intersection of N.C. 55 and Riddle Road and crashed into another car driven by 36-year-old Jamal D. Parker of Durham, deputies and the N.C. State Highway Patrol said.
According to officials, Parker died in the crash. A passenger in Parker's vehicle was injured and taken to a hospital.
