A Detroit man is behind bars after authorities said he carjacked and robbed a senior citizen Sunday in Royal Oak Township.

Angelo George Mitchell, 29, was arraigned Monday on charges of carjacking and unarmed robbery, according to Michigan State Police. He's being held in the Oakland County Jail without bond.

Authorities said an 83-year-old woman was returning to her vehicle after shopping at Dollar Tree, on Eight Mile Road, around 12:55 p.m. Sunday, when Mitchell allegedly approached her and demanded her purse and keys.

MSP said Mitchell "ripped the keys from her hand" and fled the scene in her car. At least two witnesses tried to stop Mitchell's getaway but were unsuccessful, police said.
