Learning to read isn't always easy for kids. Volunteers are needed for a Sacramento-area kindergarten reading program.

United Way California Capitol Region and Fortune Schools have teamed up for a kindergarten reading program aimed at closing the achievement gap.

Volunteers show up once a week and help kindergartners learn sight words. Sight words are words kids learn to recognize instantly. They're the foundation of reading.

No prior teaching experience is necessary. Program leaders will train volunteers on how to help kids.

Edward King is the chief program officer with United Way. He says volunteers get as much out of the interactions as the kids do.
