LUMBERTON — The Lumberton City Council approved an ordinance to allow and regulate the use of feather flags by businesses in the city.

The board chose to allow feather flags — the tall, vertical and usually portable flags which businesses often place out front — at one per 50 feet of road frontage.

The distance between flags, the number of flags allowed and where they can or cannot be located is in the ordinance, City Planning Director ArTriel Kirschner said.

Until now, the city has had no ordinance for the use of feather flags — the tall, vertical and usually portable flags which businesses often place out front. Some businesses have been told to take down their feather flags as a result, including 219 Elm, whose owner Tommy Vickers spoke in the meeting.
