ROCHESTER, Minn.--Each October, communities across the nation observe Fire Prevention Week, a time dedicated to raising awareness about fire safety and prevention. The tradition began in 1922 to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, which caused massive damage on October 9th. That date is now remembered annually as a call to learn how to prevent fires and stay safe if one occurs.

This year, from October 5th to 11th, the Rochester Fire Department is joining the effort with the theme “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.” Lithium-ion batteries power many everyday items, including phones, laptops, e-cigarettes, scooters, toys, power tools, and even electric toothbrushes.
