ENFIELD, CT. (WFSB) - The Enfield Town Council is withholding $13,000 in grant money from a local nonprofit over concerns about the organization’s warming center being located inside a church.

Enfield Safe Harbor, which operates a seasonal warming shelter, says it has enough funding to begin operations as scheduled on Dec. 1, but questions remain about sustaining services throughout the winter season without the town’s financial support.

Safe Harbor has operated a warming shelter from December through March for the past decade. The organization’s current location is the St. Patrick Church basement, which can accommodate 33 people overnight.

Last year, the shelter remained open for 121 consecutive nights, providing nearly 3,500 overnight stays for people seeking refuge from the cold.
