EAST HARTFORD, CT. (WFSB) - The suspect in a cold case murder in East Hartford was found dead in his cell.

George Legere was found unresponsive by staff members at the MacDougall-Walker Correctional Institute at around 11:00 p.m. Friday evening. He was transported to the hospital and pronounced dead early Saturday morning.

He was arrested in September in connection with the murder of 21-year-old Janet Couture in October 1973.

She was found stabbed to death in her home on Cannon Ride.

Legere was arrested on September 24th while in prison. He was currently serving a 25-year sentence for his 2021 arrest by Avon police for a separate 1984 cold case.

His cause of death is not known.
