As the federal government shutdown enters its fifth day, some federal services are paused, but key immigration functions continue operating without compensation.

Oklahoma State Sen. Michael Brooks-Jimenez, who also practices immigration law, said immigration courts remain open because they are considered an essential service.

“This includes people who aren’t those ICE officers who supervise or do check-ins for people who aren’t currently detained,” Brooks-Jimenez said.

Brooks-Jimenez said that while detainees continue to have court hearings, some administrative staff may be affected by the shutdown, including those responsible for coordinating detention transfers, providing courtroom access or maintaining internet connections for remote judges.
