WA’s top cop has issued a stern warning to drivers as the grace period for motorists caught on safety cameras flouting the law comes to an end.

From Wednesday, fines will be issued for motorists caught on the high-tech cameras breaking the law by speeding, driving without a seatbelt and using their phone.

Police Commissioner Col Blanch said that West Australians had been “given plenty of notice”.

“If you are caught in the first week, you’ll have to seriously question your ability to be on the road because you know it’s a conscious decision to put on a seatbelt and it’s an important decision,” he said on Tuesday.

“We’ve seen far too many deaths on our road.

“We don’t want to see anyone die on the road. And I certainly don’t want to send police to fatal car accidents.
