Fishermen from Pamban in Tamil Nadu’s Ramanathapuram district were surprised when they caught a rare fish, nicknamed the ‘Doomsday fish’, on Monday.
The fishermen, who had set out from Rameswaram fishing port on Sunday, were returning from the Gulf of Mannar when they discovered the unusual catch.
While sorting their haul, they noticed a glittery, elongated fish weighing around six kilograms.
The fish was identified as an Oarfish, a deep-sea species rarely caught in fishing nets. The Oarfish is often referred to as the ‘Doomsday fish’ because fishermen along the Japanese coastline associate its appearance with earthquakes or other natural disasters.
