A mayor of a German town has been critically injured after being stabbed multiple times.

Iris Stalzer, the mayor of Herdecker in northwestern Germany, has been airlifted to hospital after a suspected knife attack today.

The newly elected mayor was reportedly stabbed multiple times in her stomach and back, according to the Bild.

The mother-of-two reportedly suffered 13 stab wounds.

The 57-year-old reportedly told her son she was attacked by a group of men. She is said to have been knifed near her home before dragging herselfback into the house, according to German outlet Welt.

The police have launched a manhunt to search for the attackers.
