DENVER (KDVR) — A 2019 law that bans mental health care providers from practicing conversion therapy on individuals under 18 years old in Colorado is being considered by the U.S. Supreme Court.

The case seeks to answer whether a therapist who uses talk therapy to try and convince a juvenile to change their sexual orientation or gender identity is protected under the First Amendment. The Supreme Court will ultimately decide if the law is a rule and regulation for mental health counselors or if it's a violation of free speech.

The case involves Kaley Chiles, a licensed professional counselor from Colorado Springs, who is suing the executive director of Colorado's Department of Regulatory Agencies, Patty Salazar, on First Amendment grounds. Chiles is arguing that the law violates her rights
