WASHINGTON — For nearly six hours Monday, a major airport in Southern California had no air traffic controllers managing flights from the tower, causing delays and cancellations.

The issues at Hollywood Burbank Airport, about 10 miles north of Los Angeles, began shortly after 4 p.m. California Gov. Gavin Newsom confirmed no controllers were on duty during the evening, leading to average delays of two-and-a-half hours at that airport.

Until around 10 p.m., flights at California's ninth-busiest airport were either stuck on the tarmac or forced to maneuver without guidance from on high.

A reporter for KCAL, the CBS Los Angeles affiliate, described the situation as "kind of surreal" while hovering near the airport in a helicopter.
