Sandy Williams turned 80 on Sunday.

The day before, she took part in Danville’s longest-standing running and walking event.

”This is my last day in the 79 club,” she told the Register & Bee before lining up for the walk. “I feel great.”

Saturday was the first time she has participated in the Louie Fields Race and Pancake Breakfast, an event in its 37th year.

She wanted to do it last year, but a heart problem prevented it.

She’s also gone through two bouts with cancer, but she remains upbeat.

“But God is good,” Williams said. “I’m still here.”

Dozens of others gathered at the Danville Family YMCA overlooking the Dan River on a sunny but chilly 49-degree morning for what’s become a tradition for many.
