The number of Michigan K-12 students being expelled from school is on the decline under the latest numbers released by the state.

However, students of color and those in a special education program at the time of an expulsion incident continue to be disproportionately affected.

The Michigan Department of Education released statewide disciplinary data for the 2024-25 school year in mid-September. Student suspension data was not included in the same data sheets as expulsions.

There were 1,184 students expelled overall last year, which is down from 1,285 and 1,396 during the 2023-24 and 2022-23 school years, respectively.

Totals also remain higher than pre-pandemic, when disciplinary numbers fell amid the rise of virtual learning. There were 1,087 and 1,091 student expulsions in 2018-19 a
