DES MOINES, Iowa —

Des Moines city officials are seeking public input to address safety concerns on University Avenue, a major thoroughfare that sees about 18,000 cars daily and has been identified as a high-crash area.

John Davis, a Des Moines traffic engineer, said, "In some of the intersections are, some of the highest crashes in the, in the city. So it's safety is, is our primary focus here."

Since 2020, University Avenue has experienced 326 property damage crashes, 244 crashes with injuries, and one fatality. The city is reaching out to property owners and anyone who drives, walks or bikes in the area for feedback.

Tony LeVia, a frequent user of the corridor, emphasized the importance of safety, saying, "It's extremely important to make it safe. That's just, that's it. Period."
