OCEAN CITY — Warm water and a sunny October afternoon brought a close call for swimmers near the Music Pier on Sunday, twice, with two separate rescues.
Both rescues took place near the jetty at Ninth Street.
Lifeguards are off the beach for the year. Local officials say that can make swimming extremely dangerous.
The first incident took place at 12:23 p.m., when a current running along the stone jetty pulled two children into deeper water. Their mother and a bystander entered the water to help, according to city spokesman Doug Bergen.
Firefighters entered the water and helped bring all four people back to shore.
About an hour later, firefighters were called back to the beach, after the same rip current carried a woman away from the beach and out over her head.
