OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — The Red River Rivalry matchup between the University of Oklahoma and Texas is Saturday, and there is now a possibility that OU quarterback John Mateer could be playing.

On Tuesday, ESPN's Pete Thamel was told by sources that Mateer is pushing to return against Texas after having surgery on a broken bone in his right (throwing) hand. He's said to be reacting well to the surgery.

He suffered the injury two weeks ago, on September 20, in the first quarter against Auburn. Mateer ended up playing through the entire game with the injury and leading the Sooners to a 24-17 win over the Tigers.

Several days later, coach Brent Venables announced Mateer would need surgery on the broken bone and that he would return to action sometime during the 2025 season.
