Tasmanian councillors could be removed from their democratically elected positions under changes proposed to local government legislation.
On Monday, the state Liberal government published draft amendments to the Local Government Act for consultation, which include broad powers for the Tasmanian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (TASCAT) to penalise "serious misconduct".
Local Government Minister Kerry Vincent said it had not yet been determined what would constitute serious misconduct, but that addressing bad councillor behaviour had been central to recent reform work.
"There hasn't been a proper way to do that that has been solid enough for councillors to understand there are penalties involved," Mr Vincent said.
