LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed the new state budget with no vetoes on Tuesday. The $81 billion budget was passed by the Michigan legislature early Friday morning after months of negotiations and a narrowly-avoided state government shutdown.
“This balanced budget delivers on the kitchen table issues that make a real difference in people's lives,” Whitmer said in a statement. The signing event was not open to the press, and Whitmer did not take questions afterward.
$1.18 billion will go to the Department of Transportation. A key aspect of the transportation package is a 24% wholesale tax on marijuana. This tax would give Michigan the second-highest cannabis tax rate in the country, behind Washington with a rate of 37%, which will take effect Jan. 1, 2026.
