MADISON COUNTY, Ill. (First Alert 4) - Madison County Coroner Nicholas P. Novacich has identified the man who died in a Sunday morning crash.

Joseph Wayne Sands, 63, of Cottage Hills, was pronounced dead at 4:25 a.m. after a crash on northbound Interstate 55 near mile marker 8.

Investigators said that Sands had slowed down and was hit from behind by a box truck. After the collision, Sands’ car burst into flames.

The driver of the box truck was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
