DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — After a resurgence from a nonprofit in Durham, The Chicken Hut got the ultimate recognition for its history in politics and community giving, specifically for being a hub for Durham’s role in the Civil Rights Movement and providing meals throughout the city's toughest times.
Tre Tapp, the owner of the soul food restaurant, wiped tears from his face as the Durham City Council voted unanimously to designate The Chicken Hut as a local historic landmark. The designation is not only for the restaurant, but the entire land which also includes the neighboring daycare center.
During the city council meeting Monday night, the floor opened for Durham residents to say why they felt The Chicken Hut should get a local historic landmark.
