MONROE COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT) - The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is providing a detailed breakdown about the series of events that led to a man dying while in custody Sunday afternoon.

According to Sheriff Tommy Jones, Officer Jimmy Haynes with the Madisonville Police Department was driving on Turnpike Road to begin his shift at around 5:18 p.m. when he saw several cars stopped at the intersection of New Highway 68 with several people standing near a Ford truck that was partially in the road.

Jones said Haynes parked behind the truck to investigate, and bystanders told him the driver of the truck, later identified as 62-year-old Michael Ray Stice, of Madisonville, may be in need of medical treatment.
