SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. —
The South Carolina Department of Public Health said a bat found in Duncan tested positive for rabies.
Officials said the bat was discovered near Main and Spruce streets and was submitted for testing on Oct. 3.
Health officials said one dog was exposed and will be quarantined, but no humans were exposed.
“Rabid bats have been known to transmit the rabies virus,” said Terri McCollister, rabies program manager. “People don’t always realize they or a pet have been bitten since bat teeth are tiny and bites are easy to overlook.”
This bat is the fourth animal in Spartanburg County to test positive for rabies in 2025. There have been 81 cases of rabid animals statewide this year. Since 2002, South Carolina has averaged approximately 144 positive cases a year. In 20
