HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — A special ceremony was held on Tuesday in Hartford, commemorating the renaming of Classical Magnet High School.

Honoring a former superintendent, the school will now be named the Hernán Lafontaine Classical Magnet School.

Lafontaine is a life-long educator who was the first person of Puerto Rican heritage to be named superintendent of schools in the United States in 1979.

"Professor LaFontaine, on behalf of the entire classical community we feel blessed, humbled, honored to carry your name and your vision forward," principal Bethany Sullivan said.

Lafontaine's impact was felt by students for over a decade.
