ELLSWORTH — When the Ellsworth clerk’s office received its box of ballots for in-person absentee voting, officials said red flags went up immediately.
“As soon as she received the box she must sign for, she saw the security tape was missing,” said Shenna Bellows, Maine secretary of state.
Upon closer inspection, it was discovered that 250 ballots were unaccounted for.
“They immediately notified the Secretary of State’s office,” said Charlie Pearce, Ellsworth city manager.
“When I heard that something may have happened to the ballots, I was alarmed and concerned because election security is my top priority,” Bellows said.
Bellows said the elections division quickly initiated required protocols, which included contacting law enforcement.
