RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has updated its COVID-19 vaccine recommendations . An advisory panel is now advising shots for people 65 and older who have consulted with a doctor first.
Instead of a broad recommendation for the vaccine, the CDC is leaving it up to the individual.
“Each individual should decide for themselves how they want to balance the risks for vaccination vs. the benefits of vaccination,” Dr. William Petri, chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases and International Health at UVA, said.
Dr. Petri says the recommendation is based upon the risks of the disease itself verses the risks of the vaccine. He noted that fewer people are dying from COVID-19 or developing long COVID compared to earlier in the pandemic.
