SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - Hurricanes swirling across the Atlantic is a stark reminder the government shutdown comes in the midst of hurricane season. Storms increase the risk of flooding and the shutdown could affect claims payouts and renewals for current flood insurance policyholders.

According to the National Association of Realtors, the federal government shutdown could impact an estimated 1,300 real estate closings per day that require flood insurance because no new NFIP policies can be issued.

“Existing policies will remain in effect through their renewal date. For policies renewing soon, the policy renewal notice must have been received prior to Sept. 30 and the premium must be paid within a 30-day grace period to remain active. All other NFIP renewals are subject to reauthorization
