The Northern Territory treasurer says the federal government will not support the proposed multi-million-dollar Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Gallery (ATSIAGA) in Alice Springs in its current design and location.

Speaking to ABC Alice Springs, treasurer and infrastructure minister Bill Yan said without the federal government's financial support the project would be "dead in the water".

Mr Yan said he wrote to the Commonwealth asking for a decision by close of business on Wednesday about whether the funding commitment would be honoured.

The federal government previously promised $80 million towards the ATSIAGA, with the NT government contributing $69 million. Loading
